It seems very late to announce that you are removing the portal hubs in Dalaran and Shattrath to the other major cities. People have been asking this question for literally months and Blizz has either said nothing, or that they had no plans to change the portals.

I finally decided about a month ago (figuring it was safe this close to the expansion) to purchase the Kirin-Tor Ring so that when Cata hit I could use Dalaran as my base and have my hearthstone set to where I would be questing. Now I feel like I wasted $9,800 gold.

Yeah, yeah, I know for many people making money is trivial, but for some of us with limited play time it's not so trivial coming up with that much money. At the time I was deciding whether I should buy a motorcycle, a mammoth mount or the Ring and the ring made the most sense, but not anymore. Had I known about the change I would definilty have not bought the ring. I just want to voice my extreme displeasure at this change and about how late the decision was made.

It definitely seems like a bad idea since for 1, shratt kept its portals when wrath was released, and 2, Northrend is still a questing area that is necessary to do to get to 80, and without the portals, you have to pretty much make a big decision about whether you want to take a ship to Northrend and make it hard to go back and forth.

The reason the portals from Shattrath were not removed from Outland when Wrath of the Lich King released is that there was a new central hub with portals to all major cities in Northrend. There is no longer a neutral city hub which both factions will be using in Cataclysm. We want to ensure visiting the major faction capitals is still the most attractive thing to do in Cataclysm, rather than having people use Shattrath and Dalaran as easy connector hubs.

To make up for this, we'd like to add class trainers and Auctioneers in Shattrath and Dalaran for those leveling through The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King content.

This thread is real long.

For years there was a very stringent and tight control on travel in the game. The sense of living within this world was built around the reality of things like needing to travel from one place to another. And it was violently protected. But, the game evolved, as games do, and those original ideals gave way slowly but surely, and what became of it was a world that had been shrunken down to a few key cities, and the insides of dungeons. And while I wholeheartedly believe that players love to jump in a portal and instantly be wherever they want, that it works against a cohesive sense of the world, your character, and idea of what this game world is. Is it an expansive, seamless and amazing hand-crated world? Or a series of knobs and buttons with instant-on choose-your-location portals? While those systems of getting people into content easily has amazing benefits, I think it has its limits.

That's my personal opinion, and while I also completely agree that it sucks that I can't hearth my Goblin in Dal for leveling (and realistically abuse their intent...) that I've enjoyed since the Shattrath portals, that the benefit of once again actually having players in the game world more than make up for it. IMO.

I, for one, welcome our new flight master overlords.

I'm sure we'll all adjust -- and the mages will get richer. :)

Besides, I too want to enjoy the "hand-crated" world! Sorry, couldn't resist, and I really do agree with the sentiment of your post. It's part of the reason I don't even use a bank mule.

It's put into crates. With hands.
