Guilds are a pillar of the World of Warcraft community. Whether you're a dedicated raider or part of an easy-going leveling guild, we've made a number of changes to improve your guild experience. In patch 4.0.1, players will find that guilds are no longer part of the Social window, but instead have been given their own dedicated user interface (default: J). This interface has been completely redesigned to increase efficiency, aesthetic appeal, and ease of navigation for all guild members.
For this post, we'll be examining three core features: the professions roster, guild news and upcoming events, and improved guild controls. While the new interface contains a wealth of awesome improvements, we feel these features in particular deserve to be highlighted. This also gives us a chance to provide a bit of additional clarification. Profession Roster Under the "Roster" tab in the new Guild window, players will now be able to view the professions of all guild members. All primary professions will be listed in the professions roster alphabetically and guild members with at least one active primary profession will be placed within the roster according to their current professions. Members of the guild will be able to search for guild recipes, patterns, blueprints, and schematics in two ways (for the purpose of the post, going forward all professions' spells will be referred to as "recipes")
As with searching by player, the same filter options will be available. Guild News and Upcoming Events We've also made it easier than ever to plan guild events and keep up with the latest happenings in your guild organization.
New and Improved Guild Controls Last but not least, we'll be adding more functionality to guild management.
With respect to the new Battle.net Authenticator permission, there are certain restrictions Guild Masters should keep in mind.
A Look to the Future Keep in mind that this is only a taste of what's to come and additional features (like guild rewards) will be available once Cataclysm launches. We'll also be revealing more information about guild leveling and reputation as 4.0.3 draws closer, so stay tuned! |

The permission is entirely optional. You will not be required to set any rank in your guild to require a Battle.net Authenticator if you don't want to. |

Correct. While much of the UI architecture for guild leveling, rewards, and reputation is currently in place and will be visible in the guild pane, players won't actually be able to access those features until 4.0.3 or later (e.g. Cataclysm). |

The Social window will still exist and can be accessed using the same hotkey (default: O). It will continue to display the Friends, Who, and Raid tabs, as well as a Chat tab. Instead of the corresponding icon being located in the navigation tray, though, it's now positioned just to the left of chat window and is symbolized by a little yellow dude...thing. The elements that were previously in the Guild tab of the Social window, as noted, have simply been moved into their own pane (default: J). Its corresponding icon is a little banner and can be found in the navigation tray next to the Quest Log. |

Correct. And there's a very good reason for this (which I'm going to prime with an example scenario):
We don't want guild members who might find themselves in player A's situation prohibited from logging in or kicked from the guild. Instead, it makes sense to simply demote the guild member to the next eligible rank, one that does not have an Authenticator requirement. And making so that the lowest rank cannot have the "Requires an Authenticator" permission enabled simply ensures that these players will have a rank to move to. If you're concerned, just be sure that the lowest rank in your guild has limited access. With the changes to the guild interface, this is very easy to accomplish. :)
Meaning, you'll have the option to filter recipes depending on if they'll provide the corresponding guild member a chance to gain a skill point. |

For those of you reporting issues promoting or demoting guild members to a rank that has the "Requires an Authenticator" permission enabled, I have a bit more information for you.
As noted in the main post, if a player attaches an Authenticator to his or her Battle.net account, it may take a few days before guild controls will recognize the Authenticator and allow that player's characters to be moved to a protected guild rank. Since this feature is new with patch 4.0.1, though, this sort of "checking" has to occur globally—so it'll be roughly 72 hours from the first time a character logs in after patching before it will be eligible for an Authenticator-requir Apologies for the confusion!
Correct. While the framework for those features can currently be viewed in the guild pane, they're not yet available. We've plans to release more information about guild leveling and reputation soon, though. :) |
