Last year’s World of Warcraft Live Raid surprised the heroes of the U.S.-based guild Premonition with a series of unpredictable boss fights -- until in the end, the champions fell to the ultimate raid-killer, the dastardly gnoll known as Hogger. This year, members of the European guild Paragon rose to the World of Warcraft developers’ challenge and banded together against a new menagerie of fearsome foes summoned by Lead Content Designer Cory Stockton, Lead Encounter Designer Scott Mercer, and Game Producer Lee Sparks, while Lead World Designer Alex Afrasiabi, Lead Systems Designer Greg Street, and Blizzard eSports’ Robert “Voice” Simpson provided color commentary.

Stay Out of the Fire!

Starting just outside the walls of Orgrimmar, under the watchful eye(s) of Cho’gall, Paragon first faced down the legions of the Molten Core -- super-buffed versions of Magmadar, Baron Geddon, Shazzrah, and Gehennas. After two failed attempts trying to take out Shazzrah first, the heroes realized it was folly to try to deal with his Arcane Explosions -- and once they adjusted their strategy to take out Gehennas first, the quartet from Molten Core was extinguished. Much Hydraxian Waterlord rep was gained.

Not to be upstaged, bosses from Blackwing Lair and Blackrock Spire -- Chromaggus, Broodlord Lashlayer, the Beast, and General Drakkisath -- took their turn to test the mettle of Paragon’s members. Things looked rough at the start, but after a few corpse runs from the nearby graveyard, the last wave of classic bosses fell.

Not ones to miss out on the fun, some of the new bosses from Heroic Cataclysm dungeons were brought to bear, including Rom’ogg Bonecrusher, Ozruk, Forgemaster Throngus, and Commander Ulthok. The members of Paragon were nearly thwarted by Rom’ogg’s binding chains, but they managed to bring the Bonecrusher down with only three members left standing. Unfortunately, three bosses were still standing as well. Time was of the essence, and so Paragon didn’t have another chance to finish the job.

Next, Paragon took to the skies of Azeroth and settled on the recently remodeled ramparts of Orgrimmar to engage four of Azeroth’s most fearsome dragons: Vaelion, Theralian, Firemaw, and Gyth (with Rend in tow, of course). The four flying foes quickly crumpled under Paragon’s might (and with a bit of a DPS boost from the developers), but before they could celebrate their victory, Paragon’s fate was sealed. Deathwing himself put an end to the challenge with a superheated blast of flame, incinerating everyone and everything in his path -- and inciting the crowd to a deafening roar of their own.

But all is not lost! And hope rises from the ashes....
